Answers to Questions and replies of Wahid Salleh

Reply WS: The leadership of NDFB tries to be making a revisionist attempt at history. It is not correct to project the current ethnic conflicts in Assam to historical times. The historical wars and conflicts must be understood in their own contexts. For example, even though the Kachari Kingdom had fought the Ahoms in the past, it provided troops and other logistics during the Saraighat battles. Later when Rudra Singha wanted to march against the Mughals in Bengal , the Kacharis, the Jaintias etc. were part of his massive armies.

Reply from NDFB: The NDFB is just fighting for the legitimate rights of the Boro people. Like BJP through Rath Yatra or by demolishing the 16th century Babri Mosque or like Chief Minister Narendra Modi by killing the Muslim in Gujarat the NDFB is not trying to be making a revisionist attempt at history. We fail to understand the current ethnic conflicts in Assam as stated by Wahid.

The Boro are peace loving people and always maintaining good relationship with its neighbours. Even we will have no problem to be best friends of India if our legitimate rights are recognized by India. One should also remember, “History repeats in itself. Especially when a history is made mistake it repeats.”

Reply WS: In this age of globalization only the future generation will decide if it is a cause worth fighting for. They will see the result - if it was a freedom struggle or in the name of freedom struggle, the common and innocent people suffered while the leaders lead a life in safety and luxury, (most of the time in a foreign country) while the foot soldiers suffered and were sacrificed. We see this with ULFA and other groups also. Where has the so called freedom struggle of ULFA has lead Assam ? What it has gained in 28 years of struggle? In comparison with rest of India the North East is lagging behind. What have the common people gained? Even Bihar has marched ahead of Assam and the North East. After the liberation would your people like to live a life of free countries like East Timor , Marshall Islands , Haiti , Cape Verde etc? What has NDFB to offer them? Is there a blue print? What are the borders of the Bodoland that you are demanding? Will the Naga’s permit you to return to Dimpaur?

Reply from NDFB: What is your notion of globalisation - economic, cultural, political, religious and social systems? Hope in this age of globalisation India will start dismantling the barbed wire along with the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders and the security forces in the international border, the nuclear weapons, the missiles, all the guns and ammunitions. It will be easier for us to follow you when you stop talking in Hindi and writing in Devanagiri and use only globalises language and script. We are sorry to know that along with Iran and Egypt, India is one of the least globalising countries of the world. We fail to understand why in the age of globalisation India is reluctant to patent the Basumati rice, Yoga or Spices to the international corporation. So it is easy to learn from India what globalisation is.

A CNN survey in 2007 found that only 5 per cent people of America are in favour of globalisation. A survey of UN says that in the name of globalisation only 20 per cent of the richest population of the world is controlling 82.7 per cent of the world’ s income. The globalisation is not free from its critiques. One cannot ascertain that globalisation is everything or end in itself. Even in the age of globalisation India will have thousands of thousands hermits or Sadhus. The first globalisation has brought the First World War and now people are afraid that this globalisation may bring environmental catastrophe in this world. Anyway let us hope in this globalisation every Indian will be like Tata, Birla, Mittal, Bajaj and Mukesh Ambani soon. Let India withdraw its occupational forces so that next generation can deicide freely about our struggle.

The leaders of our freedom struggles have enduring all the hardship and difficulties. Even Indian security forces have not spared to kill their family members and bombed their houses. Despite all the difficulties and agony they are still working hard and firm on their conviction and leading the freedom movements. So it is very old type and cheap propaganda to say that common people are suffering and leaders are leading a safety and luxury life, most of the time in a foreign country, while the foot soldiers suffered and were sacrificed.

How do you know that ULFA or other revolutionary leaders are living a luxury life? Did you see them living in luxury by your own eyes? Or is it just beating the bush and cheap propaganda? All our members are volunteers. They have joined to serve the nations. We are freedom fighters. So there is no question of foot soldiers. There is no boundary, local or foreign for the revolutionaries or freedom fighters. We will operate from any safe bases.

Who are actually causing the suffering of the innocent people? There is no doubt that the Indian security forces are causing the suffering of the innocent people by killing, torturing, raping and molesting the women in the Region in the name of defending the independence and sovereignty of India. India can withdraw its security forces and see to itself.

As you want the leaders of ULFA or NDFB to go in the field and fight also we want Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukharjee, L. K. Advani or Atal Bihari Bajpayee to go to the field and fight or least to guard its international boundaries. Why only the foot soldiers of India, who are paid minimum, are suffering and protecting the independence and sovereignty of India? How many million Rupees do you spend on in the name of security of VVIP in a month? Why don’t you distribute all this money to the poor Indians who are living in slums and scum? Why do you want your leaders to be safe and sound? Our leaders are not like your leaders who were making money out of the coffin of death Indian soldiers during Kargil War. Our leaders fought well and they still want to fight. But as you want your leaders to be safe and sound, we too want our leaders to be safe and sound.

What India did to Assam before ULFA or NDFB were born? What was the development? Though Assam is known for oil, tea and timber and other natural resources what India was doing to develop Assam and Region? Don’t you know that the people of Assam had to even demand for oil refinery, bridges over the Brahmaputra or like engineering and medical institutions? Students have to demand for quality education. All Boro Students’ Union is now on cycle rally for quality education. It seems just to escape from the blame game now you are talking about the development. Recently “Look East Policy” is in hyped but in reality nothing has been done to improve the Region.

Quotation from the Sentinel will give you more information how Delhi and the Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Mani Shankar Aiyar think about the people of North Eastern Region:

Aiyar apparently said: “…this time, we have brought horses, mares and some donkeys as well. We can only hope we succeed in our objectives.” “We have brought the horse to the water but we cannot force him to drink.” This was another quotable quote that the paper had attributed to Aiyar. Does the Cambridge-educated former Indian Foreign Service officer think that he is doing the North-east a great favour by trying to promote the region, and, therefore, can go around saying anything and compare its people to horses, mares and donkeys? I would like to tell all those who joined Aiyar in Bangkok that those were not really tasteful comments. (Sentinel, October 13).

Quote: “Insurgency or terrorism cannot be given as an excuse for the lack of economic development in Assam, I don’t think insurgency can be cited as a reason for the lack of development in Assam,” says renowned US-based management guru Dipak Jain. Inefficiency of ministers and bureaucrats are rather often cited as the reasons for the lack of development in Assam.

We are happy to know from Wahid that Bihar is marching ahead of Assam. As Indian National Congress could not deliver anything to the people of India during its long campaign for independence, how can you expect something from ULFA or NDFB during its campaign for independence? One must be clear that NDFB or ULFA is fighting for the liberation from Indian expansionism and colonialism.

It is not wise to talk of East Timor, Marshal Islands or of Haiti for a prudent person. As every newborn baby has its problem and has to pass through some stages to fully develop as a human being every newborn nation has also to pass through some problems and stages, which we can call as transitional period. India had to pass through such problems and crisis worse than East Timor, Marshal Islands or Haiti. At least millions people were not killed in East Timor, Marshal Islands or Haiti just after the independence. At least country was not divided in the name of independence. We don’t have to elaborate you how even after independence of sixty years India is fighting with poverty, illiteracy, slums and scum, tuberculosis, aids, corruption etc… Give East Timor for another 50 years to come out from its crisis. We must thank the slaves of Haiti and indigenous Taino who fought and become independent and inspired all the slaves to fight and become free from their masters. Big powers Indonesia and USA cannot escape what had happen in East Timor, Haiti and Marshall Islands.

The NDFB is prepared for the worst. Quote from the Manifesto of NDFB:

“The country that achieves independence after hard and tough war is found in a complete devastation. The enemy forces take to destroy everything before they are kicked out. Industries, commercial estates, transportation and communication networks, educational and other public institutions, natural as well as human resources including non-combatants are indiscriminately destroyed by the enemy. With remnants of cruelty and vandalism as their last straw the enemy forces leave the evidence of their heroism. The Boro people and their country shall not be exception to this,” - Transitional Period and National Construction, Chapter X, The Manifesto of NDFB.

We know very well that the NDFB and the Boro people have to pass through this transitional period. India had to face this period after the independence. Now the newly born East Timor is facing this. The NDFB and the Boroland shall have to face this but hope after 20 or 30 years like India we can slowly over come this period. Don’t try to scare NDFB by comparing East Timor or Haiti. Though short, we have blue print in our manifesto. We are considering this task a Herculean task – the task of reconstruction.

Did Indian National Congress have such a written blue print for independent India? Our hearts and minds are in every inch of our ancestral land. But like Indians have to miss the Mohenjodaro, Harappa and Taxilla, some parts of Kashmir or Aksai Chin to Pakistan and China so we may have to miss Dimapur. But it is a historical fact that Dimapur was once the capital of Boro people. That is why the Dimasas are reclaiming it.

Leave us alone for 30 or 40 years, so that we can prove our efficiency and ability in the age of globalisation.
