Villagers repair road sans Govt help

KOKRAJHAR, Jan 28: Due to negligence on the part of the government the people of No.16 Amguri, Haldijhora, Gejermaka, Majabari, Brahmapara and Chandrapur repaired the 3.5 km Amguri-Haldijhora road as part of its community work recently. Around 1000 people from 22 villages tendered their physical labour and improved the road themselves which has been in a pathetic condition for several years.
The Village Road Committee (VRC) of the locality which organized the community work at the sponsorship of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) was also joined by MP SK Bwiswmuthiary and other party leaders. The community work was impressive as it involved local self government in the society with similar community works being carried out in several places of the district at the initiative of the party.
Speaking to the mediapersons, the president of VRC, Niranjan Brahma said that Amguri-Haldijhora road was lying dilapidated for several years. The students particularly suffered tremendous hardships due to bad road condition. He also said that the local villagers demanded government efforts for improvement of this important road but their demands were ignored given which they were compelled to undertake such a big community work on their own.
MP Sansuma Khunggur Bwiswmuthiar said to the mediaperson that the public shramdan carried out by the villagers was significant towards reviving work culture in the society. He urged the people to be more laborious to bring out development of their localities. He said that the spirit of community work is still alive and people of the Amguri area have effectively demonstrated their prowess. Bwiswmuthiary thanked the local people for respecting the ethics of local self government and work culture and called upon the people of the four Bodoland Territorial Councils (BTC) to follow similar steps to bring effective infrastructure development. He also thanked the BPF for sponsoring such a noble venture in a remote village.
The treasurer of BPF DD Narzary appreciated the people of No 16 Amguri area for their enterprize and tenacity in this direction. He said that the Bodos have a precedence of a unique community workculture, which currently has been forgotten. He added that such community work should be continued for better unity and fraternity.
Local villager Ram Madua said that they had no idea about government financial assistances and that their need for a better road compelled them to undertake repairs themselves, adding that such community participation will enhance the unity and understanding among the villagers. Another villager Shanti Ram Basumatary stressed on the neglected condition of the road and said that depending on the government for repairing bore no fruit.
Meanwhile, BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary assured the people of Amguri area that he would sanction an amount of 10 lakh for further improvement of the road. Maloti Rani Narzary, president of BPF women wing also participated.
