NEW DELHI, May 6 – The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has called for additional information from the Assam Government on its proposal to accord Schedule Tribe (ST) status to six ethnic communities of the State. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sought additional justification from Government of Assam on their proposal for inclusion of six communities in the ST List of Assam, said Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Dr Rameshwar Oraon in reply to a question by Kumar Deepak Das in the Rajya Sabha.
The Ministry confirmed having received a proposal from Government of Assam along with a copy of the resolution of Assam Legislative Assembly, on August 5, 2004 for inclusion of Koch Rajbongshi, Tai-Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak and communities belonging to tea and ex-tea garden in the ST list of the State.
The proposal has been processed according to the modalities approved by Government of India on June 15, 1999 for determining the claims for inclusion and exclusion from other modifications in consultation with appropriate authorities. They are the concerned State Government, Register General of India and National Commission for ST, he said.
