Intl year of planet Earth-08 observed

KOKRAJHAR, Feb 2: Along with the rest of the nation the ‘International Year of Planet Earth 2008’ was observed at Kokrajhar Government College on Friday in collaboration with the Department of Geography. The programme was sponsored by the Society for Socio-Economic Awareness and Environment Protection (SSEAEP), Nagaon under NCSTC-Network, New Delhi.
During the programme, essay writing, painting and poem writing competitions were held among the students. A good number of students from Kokrajhar College, Don Bosco School , Kokrajhar, Girls Higher Secondary School took part on the occasion where they were shown films on environment, climate change, etc. Earlier, the teachers, students and activists of NGOs working in the field of science and technology brought out a rally at Kokrajhar to focus on the environmental problems facing the earth.
In an interview with The Sentinel, Head of Department, Geography, Kokrajhar Govt College Prenjit Basumatary said the International Year of Planet Earth-08 was observed as per the directives of Society for Socio-Economic Awareness and Environment Protection (SSEAEP), Nagaon and NCSTC, New Delhi to focus on the importance of preservation of planet earth. He said that the seminar on planet earth will make people aware on preservation of biodiversity on earth. Member of SSEAEP and lecturer of Nagaon college, Gauri Shankar Narzary said that the year-long programme will include awareness programmes in every districts and blocks of BTC.
